Park 4 Charity – Handover, The General Smuts Foundation
Friday, 21st December 2007

On 21, 22 and 23 December 2007, Irene Village Mall held their “Park 4 Charity” Campaign. This Campaign was developed around the principle that Irene Village Mall, is a Mall with a heart, and this has been proven with this Campaign. The owners of the Mall, Retail Africa, also committed themselves to this project by matching the income over that weekend. This is a really bighearted offer and demonstrates the passion that the owners have for Irene and its community.

Over the above mentioned weekend all the parking revenue was donated to various selected charities, which include the following The General Smuts Foundation, Irene Homes, Choc Pretoria and The Family Federation. All these charities lie within direct proximity of Irene Village Mall.

On Wednesday, 04 June 2008, Irene Village Mall donated a R5,500.00 Makro Gift Card to The General Smuts Foundation, better known as the Smuts House Museum or The Big House. This formed part of the total R8,000.00 contribution toward The General Smuts House foundation.

General Smuts bought, for 300 Pounds Sterling, the wood-and-iron building, which has served as the Officers’ Mess. It is believed that the building was originally prefabricated in Britain, taken to India by the British Army and later shipped to South Africa. Once again the building was dismantled and transported to a new site, the farm Doornkloof, where it was re-erected at the substantial cost of 1,000 pounds Sterling, in 1909. General Smuts was at sea, on the way to England as a member of the National Convention Delegation, when Mrs. Smuts moved her family into the Big House – as it was called by the family – on 10 July 1909.

The Smuts House Museum is open Mon-Fri 09:30-16:30; Sat, Sun and Public Holidays 09:30-17:00 (Closed everyday between 13:00-13:30). Guided Tours by appointment and can be booked on (012) 667 1176

It was a privilege to have worked with an organisation that strives to keep the rich heritage and history of Irene alive by preserving an institution such as The Smuts House. Irene Village Mall will keep building on its relationships with the above mentioned charities for the future to come.
