This past weekend, Irene Village Mall went all out to celebrate Earth Hour, by making the village even greener than before! We provided exhibition space to environmentally friendly products, such as Eftech solar geysers, Envirocair household cleaners, Something out of Nothing decorating and HP Plants, and our shops were encouraged to display their green products.

IRENE VILLAGE MALL’S GREEN CREDENTIALS

The percentage of refuse recycled during 2009 was on average a record 80% of all refuse generated by the business at the mall, with a massive 18 639 m3 of landfill space saved throughout the year. In 2008 they won a Golden Award from DWS for the recycling average of 72%, the highest of all the company’s sites. For the first three months of 2010, we are already on an average of 74%, with landfill space saved this year already at 3131 m3.

This huge achievement was announced on Tuesday evening (09 March 2010) at Emperor’s Palace, where the winners of all 21 regions gathered to celebrate their success. Bongani Mkhwanazi, the Irene Wimpy manager, said that he was literally jumping for joy when the winner was announced.

Irene Village Mall Robbery

On Wednesday morning 22 October 2008 at 04h17, approximately fifteen armed men entered Irene Village Mall with six vehicles and robbed four stores. They left the Mall at 04h25. A Security Guard was held at gun point but nobody was injured during the incident.

The Udder Side

In one of his biggest projects to date, Angus Taylor, together with fellow artists and assistants from Dionysus Sculpture Works (DSW), has recently completed the construction and installation of three monumental public sculptures at the new Irene Mall. This is arguably one of Taylor’s most successful ventures too, especially in view of the fact that he has just been nominated for the 2008 Visi Designer of the Year awards for this work.

The Udder Side
Public sculpture is often expected to be imbued with a sense of solemnity and reverence. Not so The Udder Side which elevates the banal and seeks to introduce an element of playfulness and fun. The piece is an affectionate send-up of the dairy cow – the unofficial symbol of Irene.
