The Udder Side Public sculpture is often expected to be imbued with a sense of solemnity and reverence. Not so The Udder Side which elevates the banal and seeks to introduce an element of playfulness and fun. The piece is an affectionate send-up of the dairy cow – the unofficial symbol of Irene. Triksie Since when do cows squat on their haunches? Cartoonesque Triksie, with her herbaceous covering alludes to the farming history of Irene without losing the spirit of light-heartedness and anti-establishment that pervades this development. Apollonian – Dionysian Western and African histories seem to merge in the common act of playing a board game. This work poses philosophical questions of continuity and discontinuity whilst exploring relationships between individuals and the public bustling around them. |
